Advanced Composition:
​Don't Believe Everything You Think: The 6 Basic Mistakes We Make in Thinking, by Thomas Kida (annotate as you read!)

American Lit:
Choose ANY TWO of the following texts to read:
  • The Glass Menagerie by Tennessee Williams
  • Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston
  • The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan
  • The Red Badge of Courage by Stephen Crane
  • A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry
  • Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller
  • The Jungle by Upton Sinclair
  • My Antonia by Willa Cather
Assignment:
  • Choose THREE characters from EACH text you read
  • Write one paragraph of advice for each of your six characters:
  1. What could/should they have done differently in the story?
  2. What do you think about their choices and behavior in the text?
  3. What should they do in the future (if applicable)?
  • Label each paragraph with the character's name and the title of the text
  • Be prepared to submit your SIX paragraphs (3 characters per work x 2 works) when we return to school in august.

AP English Literature and Composition (12th grade): 
Students will read three works this summer and complete the Major Works Data Sheets for the fictional novel by Bronte and complete the Reading/Research Packet for Kingsolver's novel.
Read Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte and complete Major Works Data Sheet below:
Read The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kin​gsolver and complete The Poisonwood Bible Reading and Research Packet below:

Read How to Read Literature Like a Professor by Thomas C. Foster (Revised Edition).
Students will have a test over all three works the second week of school and write formal papers in class as well.​

Dramatic Writing:
Before returning to school, students should read the following books. These works will be studied in class, so students will need their own copies.
The Dark Knight Returns by Frank Miller (a graphic novel)
The Maltese Falcon by Dashiel Hammett​


Honors Women's Literature (10th-12th grade): 
Read Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier and be prepared to complete in class activities when school begins, including testing over the novel.
Honors British Literature (11th or 12th grade):
Students will read two works this summer and complete the Major Works Data Sheets for the fictional novel by Bronte.
