May Howard- Mary Butler Memorial Scholarship $500
2024 Scholarship Application
Sister Mary Butler gained her heavenly wings in the early morning hours of Monday, September 18, 2023, at Memorial Health University Medical Center. Mary Butler grew up in the beautiful town of Thunderbolt, GA and was the third child of five daughters.
At an early age Mary accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior and was baptized at Wilmington Missionary Baptist Church. During that time, she was a member of the youth choir and active in various ministries of the church. She later joined College Park Baptist Church under her Christian experience under the leadership of Rev. Larry Stell. At College Park Church Mary continued to serve, she sang in the choir and worked with the Women’s Ministry. Mary received her early education in the Savannah-Chatham County School System and was a 1975 graduate of Sol C. Johnson High School. After high school she attended Savannah State University (then Savannah State College) for 2 years.
Mary was a kind and affectionate person who loved her family, friends and children. This love was shown as she worked with children at Wilmington Missionary Baptist Church Day Care and May Howard Elementary School for a total of 46 years. If that wasn’t enough, she extended her love for children by working after hours with Pryme Tyme (now Y-Base). During the summer months, Mary served in various Summer School Programs and the Park Recreation Leisure Services.
Mary was a member of the Seven Sister Union Benevolent Society. Mary loved attending sporting events and was a number one fan of the NFL Philadelphia Eagles. She was an excellent cook. Tt wasn’t just her main course meals she famous for cooking, she was a fantastic baker of sweets. Everyone loved her famous Peach Cobbler. Her dishes will surely be missed.
Ms. Butler was a true gem, and a staple of the May Howard Family. In an effort to keep her memory and spirit alive, we want to carry on the works of her dedication to the children and community. Staff members of May Howard accepted donations in her honor with the intention of creating a memorial scholarship for her alma mater, Sol C. Johnson High School.
