Early Learning Center at Henderson E. Formey, Jr. School Ready to Open!
At the Informal Meeting of the Board of Education, Board Members received an update of progress in transforming East Broad K8 School into the Early Learning Center at Henderson E. Formey, Jr. School. The school is on-track for a July 30th Ribbon Cutting Ceremony and expects to welcome more than 500 students when the doors open on Monday, August 5th!

Safety and Security Update
Also at the Informal Meeting, Board Members received a briefing from Campus Police on Safety and Security efforts as we head into the upcoming school year. Those efforts include security upgrades at schools, enhanced training for officers, and new security technology investments. Learn more here:

Transportation Hub System Update (SY 20-21)
Board members also received an update on the implementation plan for a new Transportation Hub System scheduled to begin for Choice High School Students in the 2020-21 School Year. Those plans include an awareness campaign for schools and families over the upcoming school year. Learn more here:

Sharing the Good News!

Communications Division National Awards!
The SCCPSS Division of Communications has received two 2019 Publications and Digital Media awards from the National School Public Relations Association including the top prize – an Award of Excellence - for the re-designed Savannah-Chatham County Public School System website! The Division was also awarded an honorable mention for the bi-annual newsletter the District produces and distributes through the Savannah Morning News.

First Reads!

Policy FG – Facilities Projects Administration has been revised due to the passing of HB 322. The revisions align the policy with O.C.G.A. 36-80-27, which relates to the advertisement of bid or proposal opportunities of a certain amount in the Georgia Procurement Registry. The revisions also define Public Works Construction Projects and include approval requirements specific to the procurement of projects with a value under $100,000. Policy revisions also define the local approval requirements of purchase orders for Public Works Construction Projects in a manner that is designed to save time, provide timely response and faster service.

Regulations Revised!

Administrative Regulation IHE-R – Promotion and Retention has been modified to align with current District Guidelines and requirements of State Board of Education Rule 160-5-1-.18 regarding athletic purposes.

Administrative Regulation EEE-R(1) – Wellness Program has been revised to clearly identify parent notification procedures related to unstructured breaks and to support positive, healthy incentives under School Based Activities. Language has also been updated to offer a clear understanding of school requirements for instructional physical education as required by State Board of Education Rule 160-42-.12.   Instructional Physical Education in not connected to unstructured breaks.

Administrative Regulation JD-R – Student Discipline has been revised to update the Student Code of Conduct procedures.

Policy Adoptions!

Board Policy DCA – Fiscal Goals and Objectives has been revised to reflect a removal of the Fund Balance portion of the policy. A new Board Policy DCL- Fund Balance has been created to include fund balance information.

Board Policy DCL – Fund Balance has been created at the recommendation of the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA). This policy provides guidance of fund balances for financial reporting as required by the Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) Statement 54.

Policy GAG and Administrative Regulation GAG-R – Staff Conflict of Interest have been updated to provide guidance on employee limitations regarding paid speaking engagements and acceptance of gifts.

Policy IDF and Administrative Regulation IDF-R– Interscholastic Activities have been updated based on recommendations from GSBA regarding retention of students for athletic purposes. This includes an update to reflect Rule 160-5-1-.18.

Personnel Moves!

Julian Childers has been named the new Interim Director of Elementary School Leadership.

Eric Heady is the new Interim Principal of Bloomingdale Elementary School.

Garrett Brundage has been named the new Chief of Educational Services in Academic Affairs.

Timisha Barnes-Jones has been named the new Interim Director of School Improvement, High Schools in Academic Affairs.

Ronnie Banyard is the new Interim Principal of West Chatham Middle School.

Recent Graduates of the District’s Young Male Readiness Camp performed a song and the pledge at Wednesday’s Board Meeting. Superintendent Dr. Ann Levett greeted the students before the meeting began.
