The purpose of the Rev. Dr. Bennie R. Mitchell Memorial Scholarship Fund, (the “Mitchell Memorial Scholarship”), is to provide college scholarships to graduates of public high schools in Chatham County who display the values and ideals represented in the life of Rev. Dr. Bennie R. Mitchell (“Rev. Mitchell”).
Mitchell Memorial Scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis. The scholarship award for the 2023 - 2024 academic year will be $1000.
The eligibility criteria are as follows:
1. Applicants must be graduating seniors that will be attending an accredited two-year or four-year institution of higher education in the United States.
2. Applicants must be recommended by the counselor of the high school from which the applicant will graduate.
3. Preference will be given to applicants with financial need, defined as students who qualify for free or reduced lunches.
4. Applicants must submit a one-page essay describing how his/her activities and goals, both present and future, are consistent with Rev. Mitchell’s ideal of service to others.
Scholarships will be awarded on a non-discriminatory basis. Recipients may not be related by blood or marriage to a Scholarship Committee member closer than third cousin.
The Savannah Community Foundation will send the awarded scholarship amount to the College to assist the scholarship recipient with the payment of tuition, room, board and other necessary educational expenses.
