Published on: 3/7/2023

Every year, students from all walks of life have the opportunity to participate in the Scripps National Spelling Bee program. They progress from classroom to cafeteria, from auditorium to civic center, just as millions of other students have done before them.  The Bee has been an institution in Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools for many years.  Each school holds a spelling bee to select a winner and alternate from their school.  These students compete at a district wide event where a contestant is selected to represent the District at the Regional level.  Congratulations to Southwest Elementary Student Peniel Nti!  He's headed to the State Spelling Bee in Atlanta on March 17!

Peniel Nti is a 5th grade high honor roll, gifted student at Southwest Elementary.  He enjoys learning and collaborating with his peers.  His favorite subject in school is Social Studies though he equally enjoys Science, Math, Language Arts and writing.  He is a visual learner with a photographic memory and credits that gift from his mother.  In his free time, Peniel loves to play soccer and video games.  He believes that soccer is the best sport in the world.  His future goals are to be accepted into the STEM Academy at Bartlett Middle School and study medicine in high school.  Ultimately, he wishes to become a medical doctor because he enjoys helping people.

Peniel won first place for his school and 3rd place for the County Spelling Bee.  In addition, on February 25th, he won first place for the Region Spelling Bee and will be advancing to the state level Spelling Bee on March 17th in Atlanta, Georgia.  Thus, affirming his personal motto which is to "study hard and never give up."  Peniel is the youngest child of proud parents, Kwaku and Bessie Nti.

"We are so proud of Peniel." said Dr. Teresa Payton, principal at Southwest Elementary.  "We know he will do well at the state competition!"

The Spelling Bee is sponsored by the Georgia Association of Educators.
