SCCPSS District Spelling Bee Winner Wins Regional Bee, Will Now Move On to State Competition

STEM Academy at Bartlett Middle School student Deverell Goldson was named the winner of the Region 8 Spelling Bee Competition over the weekend and will now move on to the state competition next month.

On January 23, 2024, the 8th grader was named the winner of the Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools District Spelling Bee which earned him the right to compete in the Regional Spelling Bee held on Saturday, February 24th on Georgia Southern's Armstrong Campus. 

The State Spelling Bee competition will be held on March 15th at Georgia State University in Atlanta.  Deverell will compete against the winners from 10 regions throughout the state to earn the right to try to earn the right advance to the National Spelling Bee later this year.

PREVIOUS STORY:

​On Tuesday, January 23rd, 3rd-8th grade students from across the district competed in the annual Chatham Association of Educators (CAE) Spelling Bee at Savannah State University.  Deverell Goldson, an 8th grader from the STEM Academy at Bartlett Middle School took home the top prize and will move on to represent the district at the Regional Spelling Bee to be held on February 24, 2024 at Georgia Southern's Armstrong campus.

Lucas Norman, a 5th grader at May Howard Elementary, and Helena Nguyen, a 6th grader at New Hampstead K-8, were our second and third-place winners.  Each of these students took home gifts made possible by sponsorships from Savannah State University, Savannah State University - College of Education , Savannah City Council, the Savannah Police Department, SCAD - The University for Creative Careers, MOORE BOOKS, and the Mailbox Cafe.

Every year, students from all walks of life have the opportunity to participate in the Scripps National Spelling Bee program. They progress from classroom to cafeteria, from auditorium to civic center, just as millions of other students have done before them.  The Bee has been an institution in Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools for many years.  Each school holds a spelling bee to select a winner and alternate from their school to compete at the district-wide event.​
