SCCPSS students were treated to a special presentation from Mountainfilm on Tour Savannah January 22 - 24. Over 1800 students attended a special program of documentary short films, which included films about academic and athletic success, as well as personal achievement over adversity. The film RAW Tuba was of one of the films in the 90-minute presentation. RAW Tuba is the story of Dr. Richard White and his brother, William Smith. Dr. White grew up intermittently homeless on the streets of Baltimore, and went on to become a world-class symphony musician, professor and the first African American in the world to receive a Doctorate in Music for Tuba Performance Dr. White and Mr. Smith were on hand for a Q&A session with the students.
Mountainfilm on Tour Savannah, in partnership with Savannah Chatham County Public School System (SCCPSS) and the Georgia Film Academy at Savannah Technical College, recently selected five students from SCCPSS to participate in the Mountainfilm on Tour Savannah/Georgia Film Academy Mentorship Program. Students from all SCCPSS high schools were invited to submit applications. The winners are Tyler Pridgen, Johnson High School; Carlos Staley, Hampstead High School; Abigal Landers, Savannah Arts Academy; Oliver Pollard-Blomberg, Savannah Arts Academy; and Catherine Sneed, Savannah Arts Academy. The program is set to begin in the spring of 2020. The Georgia Film Academy program at Savannah Technical College is the perfect pathway for students to develop careers in the film industry. Through the Mentorship Program, students will learn the terms, etiquette, departments and protocol of working on set or in a production office and participate in classroom sessions and hands-on activities.
