Teachers and staff from more than a dozen Savannah public schools gathered to learn and practice constructing raised bed “Learning Garden” kits with Loop It Up Savannah and national nonprofit Big Green on Saturday, September 23. Participants constructed the beds, as well installed irrigation, soil and plants. Participants also worked in grade-based breakout groups and discussed Learning Garden curriculum and lesson plans.
In July, 18 SCCPSS schools were each awarded $2,000 grants and a Learning Garden raised bed kit from the nationwide educational gardening nonprofit Big Green. This professional development event is part of grants awarded in July by Big Green and will help schools get their gardens up and running and ensure each school’s success in teaching students how to grow their own food.
