On Wednesday, October 6, the Anti Defamation League (ADL) kicked off the No Place for Hate® Back to School initiative with Amanda Gorman. Congratulations to JaKhya Bush, Hubert Middle School 8th grade student, who was selected to participate in the interview portion with Gorman via a zoom interview.
Amanda Gorman is an American writer, poet, activist and change maker. She was the first person to be named National Youth Poet Laureate. In 2021, she delivered her poem "The Hill We Climb" at the inauguration of U.S. President Joe Biden. Her inauguration poem generated international acclaim, and shortly thereafter, two of her books achieved best-seller status. She is a committed advocate for the environment, racial equality and gender justice. In February 2021, Gorman was highlighted in Time magazine's 100 Next list under the category of Phenoms, with a profile written by Lin-Manuel Miranda.
JaKhya was surprised and honored to have been selected to participate and represent her school as well as her district. She was among thousands to submit a question to ask Gorman and was the only student from SCCPSS to partake.
JaKhya wants to become a nurse and plans to attend Georgia Southern University after graduating high school. She also thanks her guidance counselor, Ms. Brundidge, for introducing her to the Anti Defamation League No Place for Hate® initiative.
No Place for Hate® is a self-directed program designed to engage students and staff in dialogue and active learning on the topics of bias, bullying, inclusion and allyship that matter most to our community.
